Why take this test?
This vitamin blood test will test vitamin D, B12 & Folate (vitamin B9). Vitamin D deficiency One of the main functions of vitamin D is to help balance the levels of calcium and phosphorus in our bodies, which are needed to form our bones and teeth, to help our muscles contract, to help nerves carry messages between the brain and the body and to keep our cells functioning well.
Vitamin D is also important to support the healthy function of our immune system. Folate (vitamin B9) deficiency Folate is a B vitamin that’s required to make red blood cells and to make and repair your DNA. It’s sometimes called folic acid to the synthetic (man-made) version of this vitamin.
Vitamin B12 deficiency Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that your body needs for processes, like DNA synthesis, energy production, and central nervous system function. Because the ability to absorb B12 from food declines with age, deficiency is more common in older adults.
Still, that doesn’t mean children and younger adults, including those who are pregnant and breastfeeding, can’t develop B12 deficiency. Unfortunately, B12 deficiency is often overlooked and misdiagnosed. Oftentimes, this is due to inadequate laboratory testing or because the symptoms are not specific to vitamin B12 deficiency alone.
